4 things successful people do to banish burnout
If you feel like you’re struggling with overworking or maybe you laugh and roll your eyes whenever someone mentions “work-life balance,” then you want to read this.
Because here’s the dealio- If you’re working all the time but you always feel “behind,” then doing more probably isn’t the solution.
After 11 years as a therapist, 10 years in corporate, and 4 years as a coach working with high-achievers, here is what I’ve learned about how to prevent or banish burnout:
Stop blaming your job and other people
This one might be hard to hear.
I get it - Your job might objectively suck. Your spouse might be a slackass. Your work might be crazy intense.
But these are not the root of the problem.
Real talk:
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TRYING TO DO IT ALL?
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PUSHING YOURSELF ALL THE TIME?
If you’re like most of my clients - This isn’t a new thing for you.
You’ve always operated at full-speed, then crashed, only to repeat the cycle over and over.
Build confidence
If you want more time, more productivity, more fulfillment - then we need to get down to the nitty gritty.
All those things that helped you be successful aren’t working anymore. If anything, they might be keeping you feeling stuck, exhausted, and frustrated.
Greatest hits include:
People pleasing - saying “yes” to everything because you don’t want to look bad or let people down
Working hard - working a bazillion hours trying to prove yourself only to have nothing left for the things that give you energy.
Perfectionism - constantly comparing yourself to an “ideal,” only to feel like you’re a sucky failure who is never good enough.
Being “on” all the time - thinking about work, your to-do list, or all the things you “should” be doing when you’re trying to rest
These are all things that have to be tackled by building your self-worth and confidence.
Because when you feel more confident, you can stop trying to earn your worthiness by achieving more.
Live on purpose
If you’re burnt out, it’s probably because you’re living on autopilot.
You’re doing the same shit in your high-power job that you did when you were in college or grad school.
This is why you’ve tried changing jobs only to feel the same as you did in your last role.
We’re not doing band-aid approaches anymore.
This is where you:
Take a good look at your life
Get honest about what you want
Make a plan to get it
Identify the REAL obstacles (not the BS ones you’ve been trying to solve) and crush them
Find what lights you up - And do more of that
Invest in a mentor or coach
You’re really smart and you’re really resourceful.
But you know that time and energy are two of your most precious resources.
So could you DIY this thing? Damn straight.
But why would you want to when you could work with an expert who will get you there faster?
The people who go the fastest do 3 things differently from the rest:
They make decisions quickly
They take action
They don’t waste time trying to “figure things out” on their own
I wrote a post about what I’d do differently if I had to start my business all over. Because I know for a fact that hiring my coach catapulted me forward. And the 5 months I took thinking about hiring her, slowed me down and cost me a lot of time, energy, and money.
